half a century, as towers for human dwelling have grown taller; limited thought has been spared to the space that connects private units to public streets. Tower development has fixated wholly on Efficiency: How to maximize the percentage of rentable area. In a similar fashion to how sustainability concerns have drastically shifted tower designs, so too social concerns are in the process of doing the same. People are coming to expect more from their buildings than lifeless elevators and endless corridors that connect their homes to the city. And architects are beginning to respond by building places that nurture community by providing natural avenues for socialization. Following new research in Germany and Denmark, this paper explores ways that community enabling design can permeate into mid and high rise residential architecture. Ragdale Ring Competition Entry created with Brett Dong Ha Lee and Allison Wills Designed for the Ragdale Foundation’s summer theater series, ACT III broadens the role of a theater - as machine for its own creation.The construction of ACT III begins with the shaping, treating, and assembly of 25 frames of varied sizes. These large-scale looms will be strung with P.E.T warp and utilized to create seating surfaces or “nests”. The resulting ground cover will vary according to size, color, and weave pattern; but distinctly bear the identification the stage frame from which it was created. As the Nests take their place in the landscape, the vertical warp is replaced on the looms. The frames are positioned across the site to direct user’s movement and congregation, but their interaction with one another and environment is the key to its role. Light shining on the warp shimmers and cuts distinct shadows while objects moving beyond the frames are animated by the moire effect. The playful screens sway the spectators’ view of the actors, each other, and their environment. At the closing of Ragdale’s final performance for the season, the tightly woven Nests will be cut, divided and given to Ragdale visitors for secondary uses. Its measured evolution, often directed by a few, establishes a rigid form incapable of meeting the needs of a diverse population. Re-purposing the fabric of the City- parallel sheets of debris netting, hung from Manhattan scaffolding, Mille-Feuille imagines an urban framework that encourages communities to sculpt their own environment. Whether a large round is needed for a performance or a tight enclosure for contemplation, space responds to ones needs through touch. By weaving the interior and exterior spaces, the building embraces nature both for its bioclimatic benefits as well as its capacity for healing. Conceived on a 10x10 modular unit, FIE/D is designed for ease of construction, programmatic flexibility and potential for expansion to accommodate NOMI’s future ambitions. The project utilizes locally sourced materials that can be assembled on site with low tech methods, while achieving an intricate and elegant form. The woven bamboo structures reinterpret traditional construction techniques and respond to the availability of materials. Located 2 miles south of Milwaukee’s downtown, the master plan area is currently dominated by vacant industrial structures, immense block sizes, and contaminated brownfield land. – approximately ¼ square mile in size.&nbsp; Focusing on the overlap and synthesis of diverse use types, the master plan sought to introduce and thoughtfully integrate commercial, residential, and light industrial uses within a water-conscious landscape. The focal point of the master plan occurs at the northwest corner of the Grand Trunk. There, the public landscape fans out to connect with the Kinnickinnic River, establishing human scale spaces for a myriad of uses across all seasons. In a growing area with a drought of public amenities, the intent was to create a space on which even the most timid citizens would be willing to engage with the industrial face of their city. Lifting and reshaping the ground plane along a series of facets allows citizens to freely experience the facility’s roof by following a linear path. Stored ships are prominently displayed across the building’s west façade. The transparent tower serves the dual purpose of viewing area and transmission antenna. Covered for the carriage. Widened for the automobile. Over its history, Park Avenue has been retooled for transportation’s maturation. So too its median, originally built to accommodate the pedestrian was later thinned to make way for the automobile. The next phase, the move to the autonomous vehicle, will similarly require Park Avenue to undergo another realignment. The new demands set on the avenue will require significantly less right of way for traveling automobiles, as computerized driving will move more passengers in a fraction of the space. ConceptPosition Park Avenue’s median to accommodate transportation’s future. Redirect autonomous traffic within the median and commit the remainder to serve public life. At almost 20 feet, the median of Park Avenue is primed to carry two lanes of autonomous traffic. The car service of the future will also require ample drop off/ pick up area which will be supported by two additional lanes that will blend in and out of the landscape. In isolation, each section operates will limited utility: A stool and a perch to pause and view the surroundings. But when operated as collection, each section has the potential to support and build on the function of its counterparts. Individual perches come together to form tables for community meals, intimate surfaces for chess matches, lounges to stare up into the sky, rows to watch outdoor movies, and counters to exchange information and goods. Any new arrangement of sections opens up a novel vehicle for social interplay.
